The Pillai group is interested in understanding the role of noncoding RNAs in mediating transcriptional silencing of targets during germline development. The group is studying ~30 nucleotide small noncoding RNAs called Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) that are implicated in control of transposable elements in the animal germline, and are shown to be essential for maintenance of fertility. Research in the laboratory is highly interdisciplinary with the use of a variety of methodologies like protein biochemistry, cell biology, bioinformatics and structural biology. Mouse and flies are two animal models widely used by members of the group.
